Located in the Speyside region of Scotland, famous for its whisky making, The Cairn Distillery project was commissioned by Gordon & MacPhail as a contemporary partner to their established Benromach Distillery. Their vision was to create a modern distillery acting as a gateway to Speyside. Design excellence and a unique visitor experience were seen as key to establishing a memorable new brand.

NORR’s architecture team was involved from the project’s inception and found an attractive site for the client. The site lies within the Spey Valley on the banks of the River Spey at the foot of the Cairngorm Mountain range. The location offers fantastic views but is also conspicuous to its surroundings. The design needed to be site-sensitive and integrate seamlessly into the landscape.

A carefully selected palette of materials, including a sedum roof, dark grey cladding and natural stone, facilitated a respectful and contemporary design solution. The concept uses the massing of the building to screen the service yard by wrapping around it in a distinctive circular form. This curved linear form also reflects the process of distillation, which starts at one end of the curve with malt and milling, progresses through the mash house and tun room and then culminates in the stillhouse. The stillhouse is celebrated with large areas of glazing to offer views into the distinctive copper stills and out to the mountain.

On the outer edge, the visitor center is a freestanding stone tower linked to the main building by a glass entrance atrium. The building’s expression is inspired by a traditional Scottish tower house. The visitor route—through the spaces in the main building and back to the center—needed to be integrated while forming a clear linear process for the operation and production of the distillery.

Inspired by Speyside’s natural beauty, the design emphasized sustainable practices and innovative technologies to address environmental impact, including reusing waste heat. Biodiversity is encouraged with the sedum roof that supports up to 100 bees per square meter, along with extensive tree planting and wildflower meadows to promote wildlife.

The Cairn Distillery exemplifies the successful integration of innovation with tradition, setting a new standard for excellence in distillery design. This transformative project brought employment to the local community, who are proud to be associated with The Cairn. It has helped boost local tourism by attracting global whisky enthusiasts. The distillery offers a vibrant visitor experience through its blend of retail, dining and educational spaces. Standing as a beacon, it celebrates Scotland’s whisky legacy while promoting environmental stewardship in a harmonious relationship with its surroundings.
