Rock Run Collection is a large-scale mixed-use development in Joliet, IL, bringing together retail, dining, entertainment, hospitality, residential, and commercial uses within a growing regional destination. Its location at the intersection of I-55 and I-80 provides significant visibility and access while positioning the development to serve both the surrounding community and visitors from across the greater region.
The vision extends beyond assembling a collection of tenants. The experience is shaped around how people move through the development, discover businesses, gather, dine, and spend time. A mix of storefronts, public spaces, landscape, and amenities creates opportunities for interaction while establishing a cohesive identity across a development of significant scale.
For retail, restaurants, and entertainment brands, Rock Run offers more than a location. It is an opportunity to become part of a destination built to draw people in, keep them engaged, and bring them back. That energy creates the kind of visibility, connection, and momentum that helps businesses thrive while giving guests an experience worth returning to.
The challenge was to design a large-scale mixed-use retail environment that balanced operational efficiency with experiential clarity, while accommodating a variety of tenants and uses. The design also needed to address complex site conditions, including circulation, adjacencies to a casino, and regional accessibility.
Our design solution emphasizes pedestrian-friendly layouts, clear wayfinding, and flexible back-of-house operations, ensuring each tenant’s brand identity is reinforced. Special attention was given to site adjacency with the casino, residential areas, and transportation corridors to maximize accessibility and engagement.
The outcome will be a strategically planned, scalable, and adaptable retail environment that strengthens community connectivity and regional retail access, reducing the need for residents to travel to Chicago for shopping and dining. Once complete, this development will position Joliet as a regional hub for lifestyle, entertainment, and retail.
