Occupying a prominent site at the internationally recognized Granta Park in Cambridge, UK, the Portway Building realizes BioMed Realty’s vision to create a multi-tenant flexible lab and office space in the heart of the Cambridge science cluster. The reconfiguration and refurbishment of the former single occupier 94,000 square foot building has created the ability to accommodate up to eight separate tenants and has upgraded both the interior and exterior of the building to standards commensurate with the expectations of state-of-the-art life sciences companies. This includes the introduction of sustainable technologies.
The building is configured in four wings connected by generous links including two separate welcoming reception areas containing upgraded lifts and staircases. Major alterations to increase the amount of lettable space have resulted in the addition of a new mezzanine floor in the former double height winter garden. The research accommodation has been designed to include flexible floorplates to allow for various zoning configurations to meet tenant requirements.
The building is on track to achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’ and a WELL building standard of GOLD employing high-performance low-carbon elements such as a standby generator and photovoltaic panels to help generate electrical power. The building will provide tenants with seamless technology and connection services achieving a Wired Score Platinum rating.
