NORR was awarded the contract to design a purpose-built community center for Newmains Community Trust. To achieve the vision of the Trust, the form of the building recognized the local vernacular and offered a simple brick building with pitched slate roof while presenting a modern solution to the local community. The building curves between two main roads offering a pedestrian link and focal point to Newmains Town Centre, the large glazed frontages and landscaped seating areas offer a civic presence to the high street which underlines the building’s use.

Inside, the community’s needs are served with flexible spaces including a large multipurpose hall, meeting rooms, youth center, community café and IT suite. During design development, NORR pitched the idea of incorporating offices and the library, which became part of the overall design. Hard-wearing materials were used for easy maintenance and energy efficient systems such as heat reclamation and underfloor heating and an airtight skin that reduces ongoing energy costs. The Community Hub was well received by the local community and is in constant demand.
