Sakata is a world leader in breeding and producing vegetable and ornamental seed and vegetative cuttings with a focus on developing new high performing varieties that grow in climate zones across the globe. The Company initiated plans to relocate its North American headquarters, including all operations and personnel functions, to its 219-acre site at the Woodland Innovation Center in Woodland, CA by late 2024. The expansion will double the size of the existing facility and consolidate R&D and multiple other functions on a single, state of the art campus. The design vision for the expansion is to create a high-level research environment and workplace that supports the product cycle from seed growth and development to processing, testing, storage and distribution on one site.
In collaboration with Sakata, NORR is designing multiple ground up and modular structures comprising a two-story, 18,000 square-foot office, an 8,800 square-foot lab, a 31,800 square-foot warehouse with conditioned space and integrated greenhouse and headhouse. All new and modified structures will be treated architecturally to conform to the existing style. The design required a phased execution of the master plan with consideration for the agrarian landscape, climate, building entitlements, enhanced infrastructure and future growth. To support resiliency in the California growing region, a combination of concrete, steel, glass, metal panels and stucco will be used – all designed to meet seismic codes. Photovoltaic panels will be placed on the roofs of all structures and grounds on the site to help power the enhanced requirements for electricity related to operations.
The design enables Sakata’s vision for its new North American headquarters through technologically advanced workspace features, enhanced amenities for employees and creation of a culture of innovation, learning and well-being. The collaborative space will provide a holistic experience for employees from the moment they enter the campus. The teams will be inspired on this high-tech, 21st century farmstead to continue the growth and transformation of the business.
