Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, MI, is a major academic and referral center. In order to better serve the needs of the community, Beaumont Health required an expansion and relocation of the Hospital’s pediatric hematology/oncology outpatient program. The vision was to design a space of comfort and compassion to serve adolescent and young pediatric patients. The $4 million USD project, located on the second floor of the new Proton Therapy Center, would become the new home for the Skandalaris Family Center for Children with Cancer and Blood Disorders.

NORR worked in collaboration with Beaumont’s health care specialists to design a space that incorporates natural light with peaceful, calming décor that helps patients feel at ease while undergoing treatments. The new Center features seven exam rooms, a private family consult room, a family pantry, a shared infusion area and four private infusion rooms with views to the outdoors. It also provides convenient access to proton therapy treatment, located in the same building. Utilizing Beaumont Health’s comprehensive design standards, NORR’s interior designers created a universally appealing design response centered around familiar local imagery and the natural world.

The new Center doubles the size of the pediatric hematology/oncology outpatient clinic, allowing Beaumont to expand its clinical trials for adolescents and young adults. The project is the first of its kind in the State.
