Part of Unity Health Toronto’s transformative St. Michael’s 3.0 Redevelopment Project in Toronto, ON, the new Shuter Wing is a pivotal step in renewing one of Canada’s most established urban health campuses. The original six‑story, century‑old wing, was replaced with a modern two‑story structure that expands clinical capacity, enhances patient care, and lays the foundation for future growth.
Designed for a dense urban core where vertical expansion is essential, the redevelopment provides upgraded emergency and ambulatory care spaces, modernized building systems, and critical support functions across two stories and two lower levels. Fully integrated with the existing hospital infrastructure, the new base is engineered to support a future vertical addition adjacent to the Cardinal Carter Wing.
Our Health Sciences team brought healthcare planning, design, and urban redevelopment experience to navigate the unique parameters of the constrained downtown site and aging infrastructure. The project modernizes key circulation routes, enhances departmental adjacencies, and strengthens integration between new and existing clinical services across the campus.
At the heart of the redevelopment is the expanded ambulatory zone within the Slaight Family Emergency Department. The new space features a dedicated entrance for walk‑in patients, reducing wait times and improving flow. New exam rooms with advanced clinical equipment support efficient assessment, complemented by private consultation rooms, a discharge suite, and a caregiver pod for coordinated care. The final phase of the project will include Emergency Department patients having 24/7 access to an onsite diagnostic imaging hub, bringing essential services closer to the point of care.
Across the campus, the redeveloped Shuter Wing strengthens capacity, connectivity, and operational efficiency. Through strategic renewal of a critical campus gateway, the project supports Unity Health Toronto’s commitment to sustainable, patient‑centered healthcare while positioning St. Michael’s Hospital for future growth in one of Canada’s most complex urban environments.
