Located on the sunny side of the Bow Valley, near the alpine village of Canmore, its Rocky Mountain setting qualifies it as an “extreme” golfing experience and offers spectacular scenic views to players on the course. NORR’s initial design for the new Clubhouse had been approved and construction was proceeding on schedule, when the client returned from a European visit with a desire to infuse the charm of an Italian hillside residence into the new clubhouse design along with a request to expand the scope of the project’s program to include a new banquet hall and conference facility.
NORR’s team worked closely with Stonecreek Properties in a compressed period of time to assess the options for accommodating these new requirements without sacrificing the progress that had been made on site. Instead of imposing an identical architectural vocabulary for the overall complex, NORR created a grouping of complementary buildings that shared common elements but utilized individual variations and treatments to reflect the unique nature of each program component. Although the design of the project changed radically as construction proceeded on site, the end result was a successful realization of our client’s needs; one that has incorporated diverse environmental, functional and aesthetic goals into a single harmonized facility.
Rundlestone, wood siding and heavy timbers were selected from locally available sources and recycled rubber roofing tiles all addressed the client’s low impact philosophy. Individual palettes of materials and details were employed to differentiate between clubhouse, banquet hall and conference facility. Geothermal heating and the use of various green techniques for storm water management reinforced the sustainable objectives of the project. The spectacular natural setting was carefully protected through pre-defined construction management protocols to avoid damage to the sensitive alpine ecosystem. In spite of the restricted access to the site and the high cost of labor due to the project’s remote location, NORR was able to meet the client’s budget and schedule expectations through a carefully considered design strategy, appropriate material selection.
