Craigshill Primary School is a new sustainable learning campus in West Lothian that brings two 1960s-era schools together into a single, accessible, and immersive environment for children, families, and the wider community. Designed for 462 primary and 80 early years pupils and supported by the Learning Estate Investment Programme (LEIP), the project pairs high‑performance design with inclusive, curiosity‑driven learning to act as a catalyst for long‑term educational, environmental, and social value.
The project responds to multiple intersecting challenges: aging school infrastructure, the need for reduced operational carbon, and the merging of two school communities into one cohesive institution. At the same time, the school had to support a wide range of learning styles and social needs, providing both moments of excitement and spaces of retreat for children who require quieter environments.
The school is conceived as a compact, energy‑efficient cubic form housing a rich variety of flexible learning spaces. A three‑story atrium anchors the building, with classrooms stacked in groups of three around an L‑shaped layout to improve connectivity, daylight, and orientation. Large, triple‑height spaces are balanced with smaller, quieter areas, creating a layered environment that supports collaboration, reflection, and neurodiverse needs. Strong visual and physical connections to the surrounding landscape reinforce a sense of place and belonging.
The design integrates embedded learning through architecture, graphics, and technology. Inspired in part by planetary exploration, immersive visuals and a VR Cave provide cinema‑scale learning experiences, while a storytelling area incorporates a central tower offering secure retreat spaces within active zones. In the nursery, a roof oculus tracks the movement of sunlight, encouraging early engagement with natural cycles. Sustainability underpins every decision, from an exceptionally airtight envelope and efficient glazing strategy to a gently sloped roof with photovoltaics and a low carbon, environmentally sustainable energy system powered by air source heat pumps.
Craigshill Primary School will function as both a center for learning and a shared community hub, with its gym and assembly hall supporting educational, social, and civic use. Shaped by input from parents, teachers, and local residents, the school strengthens connections between students, families, and neighbors while meeting government energy‑performance targets. As a place where lifelong learning can begin, it reinforces the role of education infrastructure in fostering resilience, inclusion, and opportunity.
